Traditionally, the goal of computer graphics has been photo-realism, to generate synthetic images that are indistinguishable from photographs. Today, could said that this objective has been achieved. Given enough time computers can generate imagery that is indistinguishable from photographic images to the naked eye, and there are models that simulate optical processes down to the level of individual photons. Generating computer images that are indistinguishable from photographs is essential for a range of applications, including design, marketing and entertainment industry. In many applications, however, an artistic image has advantages on a photographic image. Artistic images omit extraneous detail, attention will focus on relevant features, clarify, simplify, and how to eliminate ambiguity, and show hidden parts. This has led to a growing number of scientists to question the realism as the only goal of graphs computer, and ask: What are the images that we serve?

If the purpose of an image is the simulation of the interaction Physical between light and matter (for research, conceptualization realistic, or entertainment), then, photo-realism is a logical choice sound. If, on the contrary, the aim is more general or abstract (to give an idea, to give instructions, explain a situation, for example) then photo-realism can confuse the issue at hand through sufficient specificity, visual clutter (masquerading), and physical limitations. For example, the map spatial configuration of a subway system does not include every bend and corner (specificity), because only the stations and their relative positions are of interest to the viewer. The map includes all buildings and streets where the underground work (visual clutter), as this makes it difficult to see the subway routes. Finally, the map could not have been captured in one photograph (physical limitation), because most of the underground metro system are mutually hidden.

The Three types of Artistic Computer Graphics

We use the classification system of the Gooch and Gooch textbooks which identifies three areas of computing graphic art: (1) ~ Natural simulation media, (2) ~ Software tools for artists, and (3) ~ Artistic style simulation.

Simulating natural media: artistic representation of the community gives you the freedom to choose the print media, plus a camera for imaging. Simulating natural media deals with the simulation (realistic) of the substance that is applied to an image (eg, oil, acrylic, coal), the instruments with which the substance is applied (eg, brushes, pencils, crayons), and the substrate to which the substance is applied (eg canvas, paper). In all cases, the media is intended to produce simulated surface marks that are indistinguishable from the real media.

A common assumption in the community of graphic art is that the provision affects only the simulation of natural media art. This assumption is not surprising, because the first research in the field focused on the reproduction of traditional art forms such as pen and ink, watercolor and oil on canvas. Technology development in any field of the first attempts to mimic the previous mode of work. Therefore, artistic representation seems to be following the pattern normal development. Artistic representation now covers a wider field of research. For example, a recent trend in research techniques of artistic representation is interactive. The current work focuses on the detection and delivery of feature lines to communicate. Silhouettes, and surface texture boundaries and folds are important to communicate the shape of an object.

Computer Tools for Artists: Simulation of the media itself is of little practical use if it is not controlled by an entity. One of the most important skills for an artist to learn is to choose the correct medium for a given subject. Artists make those decisions guided by considerations such as aesthetics and effectiveness of the communication medium required visual message. Assist users in creating images is therefore a worthwhile effort. Commercial products such as Photoshop or CorelDraw provide a comprehensive set of tools and functionality re-purposing of standard input devices (mouse, keyboard, digital tablet). Other programs and jobs research help users with tasks technically difficult, tedious or repetitive, but ultimately, the user still has to create the image and therefore make all decisions about the design, layout, placement, etc.

Artistic Styles: The last category NPR research draws on existing artistic styles and attempts to transform automatically some data (usually the geometric models or photographs) images in a particular artistic style. Examples of this work includes the creation of line drawings of three-dimensional models, light models cartoon as shading and pictorial models of geometric systems, videos or photos.

It is noteworthy that none of these systems involves the creation of art, limited to generate images (as realistic as possible) resemble a particular artistic style. In summary, much of the art research computer graphics image is dedicated to the real (as opposed to photo) creation.
