What am I doing wrong in photoshop?

Okay so I was doing a tutorial (http://abduzeedo.com/sparkling-hot-girl-photoshop) one for be exact …… and I do not know what I'm doing wrong with the tool "pen" … when you trace the image that it covers, which is white … instead of lines little movement of points around

it (also what happens when "something select ') anyway I suck so bad at explaining things PLEASE HELP ME, basically, I do not know how to use the pen tool properly because when we try to trace the object instead of the lines around it, creating a white covering over my image

Instead you must click the middle icon of the three away from the left, just below the word "image" in the menu. Must say "Routes" when you mouse over it.
